How to build a stronger team in your club

By Abi Jacks | 22 July 2026

There comes a point in most clubs when it feels like almost everything lands back with the owner.

Questions from parents, holiday activities, timetables, marketing, safeguarding, new ideas. Even decisions that seem small somehow find their way back to the same person.

It's exhausting, and it's easy to conclude that the answer is finding more people.

Sometimes that's true.

More often, though, we've found there's another opportunity that's easy to overlook. The people already in your club may be capable of contributing far more than their current role suggests. They simply need the opportunity, confidence and support to do it.

That's where stronger teams begin.

Look beyond the role someone was hired to do

When you think about your team, it's natural to think about the jobs people already do.

Teachers teach.

Administrators manage bookings.

Reception staff welcome families.

But people are rarely defined by their job title.

The teacher who builds brilliant relationships with parents might also become the perfect person to improve communication across the club. The coach who's naturally organised may enjoy coordinating holiday activities. Someone who loves taking photos at events could become a valuable part of your marketing.

Building a stronger team often starts by recognising strengths that have never really been used before.

Confidence comes before responsibility

One mistake clubs sometimes make is assuming people will naturally grow into bigger responsibilities once they're given them.

Confidence doesn't usually work like that.

Most people become confident because they've had the chance to learn, try something new and know they'll be supported if they get stuck.

Marketing is a good example. Many clubs assume they need to find somebody with marketing experience, when often the best person is already part of the team. They know your families, understand your culture and see the moments that make your club special every day.

What they often need is a place to start.

ThriveHub's Strengthening Your Marketing Foundations course gives people practical guidance and helps them build confidence before taking the next step through the Growth & Marketing Blueprint, where they can learn how to develop a simple plan for improving visibility, attracting new members and keeping existing ones engaged.

The same approach applies across every area of your club. Whether someone wants to improve communication with families, support day-to-day operations or develop leadership skills, giving them the opportunity to learn creates far stronger results than simply asking them to take on another responsibility.

Create an environment where people can grow

Helping people develop isn't about adding more work to their week. It's about creating the conditions where they can succeed.

That means clear expectations, access to the right information and simple systems that make it easier for people to contribute with confidence. When everyone understands how things work and where to find what they need, people are much more willing to step forward because they don't feel like they're figuring everything out alone.

That's why developing people and improving the way your club operates often go hand in hand. ThriveHub's operational learning and our Operations Focus Area explores practical ways to create clearer communication, stronger systems and shared ways of working that help the whole team contribute more effectively.

A stronger team changes what your club is capable of

The biggest benefit of developing your team isn't that you have fewer jobs to do. It's that your club becomes capable of more.

New ideas are more likely to happen because people feel able to suggest them. Communication improves because responsibility is shared. Staff develop new skills that benefit both them and the club, while members and families enjoy a more consistent experience because knowledge no longer sits with one or two people.

The strongest clubs aren't built by asking people to do more.

They're built by helping people become capable of more.

If you'd like to strengthen the way your team works together, Operations Focus helps you review how your club develops people, shares knowledge and creates opportunities for individuals to contribute with confidence. Together, we'll identify practical ways to build capability across your team and create an environment where people continue to grow.
