Creating a more connected experience for a growing sailing community

Keeping Everyone on Board

Saltash Sailing Club has been part of the Cornish sailing community since 1898, bringing together everyone from first-time sailors to experienced competitors along the banks of the River Tamar.

Today, the club supports a vibrant membership of more than 600 people, united by a shared passion for being out on the water, whether through racing, cruising, spectating or learning to sail.

As the club continued to grow, the management committee wanted to make sure the member experience continued to feel welcoming, connected and easy to navigate for both new and long-standing members.

As expectations evolved, the committee recognised that joining the club and staying connected to activities needed to feel more straightforward and accessible for members.

Making it easier for new members to get involved

Like many long-established clubs, Saltash Sailing Club had gradually built ways of working around the needs of the organisation over time.

But as expectations evolved, the committee recognised that joining the club and staying connected to activities needed to feel more straightforward and accessible for members.

The focus became creating an experience that felt easier to engage with from the beginning, while still reflecting the welcoming and community-led culture the club had built over generations.

Helping volunteers feel more supported behind the scenes

The club is supported by volunteers across multiple areas, all helping keep the community active and connected throughout the year.

As membership numbers increased, the committee wanted to create greater clarity across the wider club community so responsibilities felt easier to oversee and communication felt more consistent for everyone involved.

That visibility helped reduce pressure on volunteers and created more confidence across the wider team.

Creating a more connected club community

As communication became clearer across the organisation, members were able to stay better informed about events, activities and opportunities happening throughout the club.

That consistency became especially important following the first lockdown period, when the club experienced a significant increase in new member interest and needed a more adaptable way of welcoming people into the community.

Rather than simply managing growth, the club was able to focus on helping new and existing members feel part of the wider sailing community from the outset.

Supporting the next chapter of the club

For Saltash Sailing Club, the biggest difference has been creating a stronger sense of connection across the organisation itself.

Volunteers have more capacity to focus on supporting the club community, members have a clearer and more consistent experience, and the management committee has greater confidence supporting the club as it continues to evolve.

As the club looks ahead, the focus remains firmly on creating positive experiences for members both on and off the water, while continuing to strengthen the community that has defined Saltash Sailing Club for more than a century.

Volunteers have more capacity to focus on supporting the club community, members have a clearer and more consistent experience
